Why Youngbloods aren’t worried about the state of the industry

Young Voices Article 01

If you’re not chronically online, you may have missed the news about a certain ad industry publication that is circulating on LinkedIn. It’s a telling snapshot of our industry that, naturally, brings up a lot of emotions. Mainly anger. What’s more important than this mirror being held up to the industry are the discussions it’s sparked. Numerous leaders and agencies have, thankfully, spoken up. However, what’s been missing from the conversation are the perspectives of juniors.

The online and in-person opinions that we have been, and continue to be, exposed to are inherently biased, because often, they’re coming from the top. From the ones who have “made it”. And rightly so, they earned their voices. They had to struggle through the system that was even less inclusive than the one we have today. Their wealth of experience is invaluable, especially during these discussions. However, this means that there's a lack of diversity in levels of experience. A holistic, systemic change will need to come from all angles – not just the top. And we, at Youngbloods, are already seeing it happen.

When we host events for industry newcomers, industry veterans often join us as speakers and participants. And, time and time again, they’ll tell us one thing, “I wish we had this when I started”. That’s our mission, to make the industry more inviting and inclusive. For young people, by young people. We’re helping to cultivate a new industry. An industry that makes space for everyone. I can’t thank our committee members enough, they’re not ECD’s, EP’s or CEO’s. But, they will be… And, sooner than we think.

In 5, 10 or 15 years, these conversations and publications will be very different. Because the people will be. I know, firsthand, how clever (and opinionated) the next generation is. But, why wait for them to reach the top? I’d rather give them a metaphorical soap box to stand on.

Introducing Young Voices,

Thought leadership from juniors who haven’t made it, yet.

From here, we’ll be sharing the voices of future industry leaders. Giving the industry a window into what will be and the people who will lead it.
